Ubuntu – Is it possible to backup individual files with Deja Dup

In the Deja Dup preferences, it is possible to select certain folders to backup and certain folders to exclude.
I would like to be able to backup individual files in my Home folder (Such as .vimrc and .bashrc), but I don't see any way to do this.

So my question is, is it possible to either

Select individual files (instead of whole folders) to backup, or
backup my Home folder, but exclude all subfolders?

According to mterry last Febuary, this isn't something Deja Dup can currently do:

Although he's talking about exclusion, it's the same principle as inclusion. Your better off symlinking the files you want to backup into a separate directory and then backing up that.

If your purpose in backing up /etc is just to protect against accidental error, consider using etckeeper to store it in version control. Install the etckeeper package, which will automatically set it up, and will automatically commit configuration changes. If you need to revert an erroneous configuration change, use sudo bzr on the /etc/ repository.

You can edit the exclude list like:

gsettings get org.gnome.DejaDup exclude-list
# remove comment to execute
# gsettings set org.gnome.DejaDup exclude-list ['path1', 'path2']

I tried to add patterns like '**/.git' and '**/build' into that list, like this:

gsettings get org.gnome.DejaDup exclude-list > exclude-list
gedit exclude-list
gsettings set org.gnome.DejaDup exclude-list "`cat exclude-list`"

But to me it seems like the **'s were not passed to duplicity. So instead I ended up doing seaches like

locate "/home/*/.svn"
locate "/home/*/build"

and added them to the exclude-list manually
