First remove all currently installed NVIDIA software.
In the GRUB boot menu, select the Ubuntu menu entry and press the E key.
Add nouveau.modeset=0 at the end of the linux line.
Press the F10 key to boot into the Ubuntu system.
When the login screen appears press Ctrl+Alt+F1.
Enter your user name and password and then execute :
sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo reboot
Install the drivers supporting NVIDIA GEFORCE 920M.
In the GRUB boot menu, select the Ubuntu menu entry and press the E key.
Add nouveau.modeset=0 at the end of the linux line.
Press the F10 key to boot into the Ubuntu system.
When the login screen appears press Ctrl+Alt+F1.
Enter your user name and password and then execute :
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-361 nvidia-prime
sudo reboot
Note: Leave a Space between the last character in the linux line and nouveau.modeset=0.
After the NVIDIA drivers are installed, adding the boot parameter is not necessary any more.
Switch between Intel and NVIDIA graphics with NVIDIA X Server Settings -> PRIME Profiles.
This file was modified by the Community with no fresh time stamps after May 7 2016, but there should be one for Sep 16 2016 because it showed up on the active list.
The answer above sudo apt-add-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa today results with:
Fresh drivers from upstream, currently shipping Nvidia.

and then say yes when it asks you to submit your results to openbechmarking.org. Then grab a cup of coffee, it takes a bit for the benchmarks to run. Be advised there are instructions on Nvidia site about disadvantages of upgrading Debian (which Ubuntu is based on) versus clean install.
Also be advised Nvidia website might have special instructions for Haswell, however their current drivers use the same one from my lowly GT650M up to OP's GT760M but there can be all kinds of recommended changes in other areas of the system based on Intel CPU and/or systemd or Debian.
Also there are special circumstances like the OP where Integrated Graphics and Discrete Graphics aka "Hybrid Graphics" are built into the Motherboard.
The Nvidia website does talk about black screens that are common questions in A.U. (Ask Ubuntu) so it's a worthwhile visit for most reading the OP's question.

I fixed the problem by installing the tested NVIDIA drivers for Ubuntu:

So, GeForce GT 750M /PCIe/SSE2 driver is installed.
BTW, I switched again on the open source driver. NVIDIA drivers had important issues (overheating and sometimes the entire screen was freezing).
After applying changes and rebooting Ubuntu started in low graphics mode. I pressed ALT + CTRL + F1. I deleted the following file:
Then I restarted the PC:
My machine uses again the open source driver and it works fine. If you don't have big issues with the open source driver, I really recommend not to switch on the closed source one.
