Ubuntu – Installing additional drivers without Internet connection

I have an Acer Aspire 3690 laptop who's ethernet adapter is not working due to IRQ conflict with the mouse (report during startup….press F1 to continue or F2 to setup). I tried to see and change settings in setup but there is not much other than boot menu that can be changed and could solve the broblem.

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 but the wireless driver is not working. When running the additional drivers app, it does reports that it wants to install the Broadcom STA wireless driver, but I have no ethernet connection to at least install the correct drivers for the wireless adapter.

Any ideas how to fix my dilemma?

Have you tried changing the IRQ settings in your BIOS (hitting F2)? The IRQ conflict isn't going to go away on its own.

If you can't change it, you can try a couple of different things:

Move your mouse to a different USB port (ideally, one on the opposite side of your computer, so you get a different USB controller)
Try a different mouse (if you can get your hands on one, and your computer has a port, try a PS/2 mouse)
Go to Broadcom's site, on a different computer, and see if they have the Linux drivers for your card. Download them to a USB drive or CD and install it that way.

Late to the party, but could be of use to someone. If you still have the Live USB from which you installed the OS, insert the flash drive (if it doesn't automount, open the Disks utility and mount it from there). Once it's mounted, open the terminal and go:

sudo dpkg -i /media/username/volname/pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_*.deb
sudo dpkg -i /media/username/volname/pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-source_*.deb

replace username and volname with your username and the USB volume label, respectively. after the install completes, reboot.

This folder structure is based on 15.04, should be similar in older versions.

If the terminal comes out with an error, open the file explorer and go to your Live USB. Then go the the same directory as above:

/media/username/volname/pool/main/d/dkms/

And

/media/username/volname/pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/

And click on the file in each directory. It will bring up Software Center. Install or reinstall both files.

Please run:

lspci -nn | grep 0280

Is your pci.id 14e4:4353? If so,please do:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
sudo apt-get install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo modprobe wl

Your wireless should now be working.

If your pci.id is different, please post it and we'll recommend a fix.
