Ubuntu – install php 5.3 on ubuntu 14.04

I just installed Ubuntu server 14.04, I need to migrate my site from old server Ubuntu 10.04 (which has php 5.3) to the new server,

but currently when i install php using

`apt-get install php`

i found the installed version is "PHP 5.5", how can i install 5.3?

If it is n't possible, what is the previous possible version of Ubuntu i should downgrade to be compatible with "PHP 5.3"?

I can think of 2 different options:

try the solutions posted in this topic
compile from source, although I wouldn't recommend this because you'll have to recompile after every security update

Btw, have you tried the site under PHP 5.5? Because if everything works well I can't think of any logical reason to downgrade.

Pre-requisites

You will need these two extra packages if you don't have them:

sudo apt-get install build-essential libxml2-dev

Install PHP

In terminal:

wget http://in1.php.net/distributions/php-5.3.29.tar.bz2
tar -xvf php-5.3.29.tar.bz2
cd php-5.3.29
./configure
make
make test # Neither mandatory nor a bad idea.
sudo make install

The instructions will untar the source build and they will install php in your system.

Ubuntu – Downgrade from PHP 5.5 to 5.3 on Ubuntu 14.04

You could go with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Security support runs out for that in less than a year, but that should give you enough time to patch your PHP.

In my opinion using an Ubuntu-supported package is preferable to compiling from source, and 10.04 does happen to have the version you want as its official package.

Eventually you are going to have to patch your PHP code, however. It shouldn't be that difficult to bring it into compatibility with later PHP versions: all issues will be well documented online, and there will only be a small number of issues that would affect backward compatibility. Older versions of PHP won't be supported forever and eventually you'll end up with security problems if you stick with PHP versions that are not officially supported.
