Fix Indicator Icons Not Appearing After Ubuntu 17.10 Upgrade

Only GNOME extension and native icons are displayed. Other icons like Dropbox, shutter, enpass etc. do not appear in the top bar.

Am I missing something? I already tried using extensions that I used with GNOME before but nothing (Topicons Plus, Ubuntu appindicators etc.) seems to help.

Currently I'm using Ubuntu Xorg, but in Wayland I have the same issue.

I've encountered the same problem. I tried to remove the indicator-application-service completely, and see, the problem went away! I guess coming from 16.04 leaves some Unity-related stuff on my machine that is not only obsolete but prevents the AppIndicator extension from properly working.

What to do:

sudo apt remove indicator-application

I can suggest an ugly workaround. Try at your own risk.

Remove Ubuntu appindicators (not at all recommended, it will remove ubuntu-desktop metapackage) by running
```
sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell-extension-appindicator
```
Install and activate KStatusNotifierItem/AppIndicator Support. It should show most of the app icons excluding electron based apps (Skype, Wire etc.), Thunderbird with Firetray etc. with the correct icon sizes.
Install and activate TopIcons or TopIcons Plus for the rest of the app icons.

I'm not sure whether installing "KStatusNotifierItem/AppIndicator Support" is necessary. But in my case TopIcons Plus is showing only the app icons not supported by "Ubuntu appindicators" or "KStatusNotifierItem/AppIndicator Support".

What I did was:

```
sudo apt purge indicator-common
```
Then you can enable either the TopIcons Plus or Ubuntu AppIndicators extension
Reboot the system or instead you could just reload the Gnome Shell with Alt+F2, then R.

Then you would be able to see the icons on the GNOME's bar.
