Ubuntu – I can’t change screen resolution on VirtualBox with Ubuntu server installed on it

I have installed Ubuntu server 10.04.4 on VirtualBox but the screen appear too small. I read some guides that i have to change settings in grub to change the screen size, so i go to /etc/default/grub, opened grub in editor and edited this line #GRUB_GFXMODE=640×480 to GRUB_GFXMODE=1280×760. This is a resolution that my video card supports.

Then i updated grub and restarted the machine but it didn't work. When the machine starts loading in the beginning for a few seconds it goes into the screen resolution i have set but then goes back to the initial small screen resolution.

Any idea why it doesn't work?

Please elaborate are you talking about X11 server in the VM or about terminal fonts? In the former case you will need usual VBox Guest Extensions / DKMS, in the latter it heavily depends on text console management commands. I doubt that grub text console settings persist into login session, especially after this stuff with Plymouth et al.

It sounds to me like you need to install "VirtualBox Guest Additions" on your Windows 7 guest.

Fire up you Windows 7 machine. Navigate to the top of the screen and click on "Devices". In that window, click on "Insert Guest Additions CD image". This will mount the VirtualBox Guest Additions CD as a drive for installation.

The program may open by itself, but if not, navigate on the, so called, disc to "VBoxWindowsAdditions" .exe file or your architecture (amd64 or x86) .exe file, and double click it. This will install all the drivers you need to run your Windows 7 guest. You now will be able to run your VirtualBox full screen.

Server – Change Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS Bionic Console Screen Resolution

1. Get supported video mode (use vbeinfo instead of hwinfo)

reboot
hold down SHIFT after the BIOS/UEFI finished
press `c´ for the GRUB command line
type set pager=1, then hit ENTER
type vbeinfo, then hit ENTER
take a note about the supported video mode you need Mode 0x031b: 1280x1024 (+3840), 24 bits
reboot

2. Modify / add the following lines to /etc/default/grub to match the ones below

>     GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="video=0x0345 gfxpayload=true"
>     GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="video=0x0345 gfxpayload=true"
>     ...
>     # The resolution used on graphical terminal
>     # note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
>     # you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
>     GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024x24
>     GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=1280x1024x24
>     GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1280x1024x24

3. Update GRUB

sudo update-grub

4. Reboot

sudo reboot

Note1: I've tested the above solution with Ubuntu 18.04 Server and Desktop on VirtualBox.

Note2: Didn't include linux terminal (emulator), putty, cygwin, conemu and other fancy tools, because this is about the bare console.

None of the sources I used had a complete solution, but putting the parts together, solved the problem for me.
