Ubuntu – How to write š, č on Latvian keyboard

In Ubuntu, to write ā, ē, ī, ū (vowel with macron or garumzīme) I type

Alt + - + letter

with the Latvian keyboard set

To write ģ, ķ, ļ, ņ (consonant with cedilla or mīkstinājuma zīme) I type

Alt + , + letter

But how to type č, š, ž (consonant with caron, háček or another type of mīkstinājuma zīme)

Alt + ??? + letter

The keyboard settings are the following:

Other options for the compose key are

Disabled, Right Ctrl, Right Win, Left Ctrl, Menu, Caps Lock.

AltGr does not appear as an option.

The Latvian keyboard layout is prepared for the characters you mention:

AltGr + S = š

AltGr + Shift + S = Š

AltGr + C = č

AltGr + Shift + C = Č

You can do this through the dconf-editor. If you do not already have it installed, you can install it with:

sudo apt-get install dconf-editor

Navigate to org >> gnome >> desktop >> input-sources

Click in the setting, xkb-options and add 'compose:lwin' inside the square brackets. The single quotes are required.

If other options are already there, the order does not matter; but separate the options with a comma: 'compose:lwin','other:option'

For those who looks for a command line solution (without installing dconf-editor) you can use:

$ dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options 
@as []

This will tell you the current state of the key. Now you can insert your own:

dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options ['compose:lwin']

This command as above worked fine for me, but @bryce reports that he needed double quotes, as in:

dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/xkb-options "['compose:lwin']"
