I am trying configure the Calculator to do some binary to hexadecimal conversions but I can't seem to get to scientific mode. Please can someone tell me how I configure?

Sometimes it's the easy things. Inspired by @Lucio who said that this should work I rebooted and it does now. Now I also saw that it says "Changes take effect next time you log in.". Read first, then ask. Should have done this in the first place, sorry for that!
So for everyone who wants to achieve the same:
- Go to
System Settings...=>Language Support - Make sure the language for your format locale is installed. You can install it using the
Install/Remove Languagesbutton - Go to the
Regional Formatstab and choose your country - Click
Apply System-Wide - Reboot! (Or log out and back in. Should also work)
The default calculator should now accept the decimal mark used in your locale.
From what I have seen Gnome Calculator does not have keyboard shortcuts to those functions. Either way Qalculate lets you do exactly that.
To install either search it in Software Center or using terminal:
$ sudo apt-get install qalculate-gtk

The Calculator has various modes. What you are looking for is the Programming mode, which lets you display numbers in various bases. To use it, select Calculator › Programming from the menu.
As you asked for the scientific mode, I must add that functions commonly used in scientific calculations are available using Calculator › Advanced.
