Ubuntu – How to use Counter Strike 1.6 on Ubuntu 12.04

I wish to install Counter Strike 1.6 on Ubuntu 12.04 under wine, but I don't know where to get the source (I have an exe setup file) or how to run it under wine. I will connect to international servers using IP.

Please, give me step by step instructions on where to download the source and how to run it under wine. I'm fairly new to Linux.

Steam Client for Linux was recently officially released for Ubuntu together with the original Half-Life family that includes Counter-Strike 1.6. There is no need to use Wine.

To install Steam, open Ubuntu Software Center and search for "steam".

Well, you skipped the important part in those instructions: "navigate to where you put the starcraft installer, and..."

When you put in a CD, Ubuntu mounts it in a sub-directory of /media/, so first you need to navigate there:

cd /media
ls

the last command will print a list of directories which correspond to your mounted devices. Identify which one correspond to you CD (cdrom would be my guess), then

cd cdrom 
ls

then, if you see starcraft_installer.exe in the output, you can proceed with the instructions.

Ubuntu – Install wine1.5 not wine1.6

If it works on wine 1.5 probably it works on 1.6.

Wine 1.5 was a development version that was renumbered to 1.6-rcX as it got close to stable. Wine 1.6-rc1 was released at 2013/06/07, the code was frozen and now only bug fixes (no new features) are accepted.

Stick to wine 1.6, probably it'll work.

I successfully installed Adobe Reader 10.1.4 on wine 1.6-rc4, here's what I've done:

Downloaded Adobe Reader 10.1.4.
Ran winecfg and set Windows version as Windows XP.
Ran winetricks -q mspatcha as recommended at WineHQ appdb.
Installed Adobe Reader by running: wine ~/Downloads/AdbeRdr1014_en_US.exe.

Adobe Reader complains about "Protected Mode" at start up. I just choose Always open with Protected Mode disabled and had no problems.
