Ubuntu – How to upgrade 12.04.2 kernel and HWE to raring

As the topic states I want to upgrade my 12.04.2 to newest raring lts kernel and HWE.

Now I have:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Release:        12.04
Codename:       precise

Linux NAS 3.5.0-28-generic #48~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 24 21:42:24 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Some history:
Originally installed 12.04.1 LTS, then upgraded to 12.04.2, and some time ago I've upgraded kernel and HWE to quantal by installing:

linux-generic-lts-quantal and xserver-xorg-lts-quantal

Now I'd like to the same but to raring. And there lies the problem, as linux-generic-lts-raring exists but xserver-xorg-lts-raring does not. Did the procedure change, or I'll have to wait a bit for xserver to show up in the repos ?

The xserver-xorg-lts-raring package was on proposed repository for a while, but I just checked again and it's now available on main. I have only the regular repositories enabled (no proposed nor backports) and was able to install it alongside linux-generic-lts-raring and it's running fine on my system.

I have same problem. Linux mint 14 Nadia, is just fine with yahoo mail, only in ubuntu 13.04. It is only yahoo for me, as gmail is fine. Fond a solution here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2139807&p=12623430. I opened synaptics and marked for full removal, but synaptics crashed. So I opened up in terminal and typed:

sudo apt-get remove unity-webapps-yahoomail

And everything works again! I do not know what the webaps does for me, I read that I could reinstall it and it would work, but for now, I will leave it uninstalled and enjoy my yahoo. mail! Thank you Jenks 141 for leading me to the solution!

Ubuntu – How to replace ubuntu 20.04 kernel with clearlinux kernel

I don't have specific experience with ClearLinux, but it looks like you can:

# It's best to first compile their gcc (https://github.com/clearlinux-pkgs/gcc)
mkdir ~/patched_source
git clone https://github.com/clearlinux-pkgs/linux ~/clearlinux_patches
cd ~/clearlinux_patches
./scripts/develop.sh linux.spec ~/patched_source

That should download the upstream kernel to a folder below ~/patched_source (it will tell you the exact name) and apply ClearLinux's own patches and default config.

You can then proceed to compile the kernel as usual, for instance:

cd that_folder
CC=/the/clearlinux/gcc make -j4 bindeb-pkg
# This will take a while and create a few linux-xxx.deb files in the parent directory
sudo dpkg -i ../*.deb   # Or just the latest

Disabling the CONFIG_RETPOLINE mitigation makes it possible to compile with Ubuntu's gcc (at a cost, obviously).

The usual warnings apply: try in a VM first, secure boot can be tricky, there might be some Ubuntu-specific patches missing, ...

If you feel adventurous you can also add some of their own cmdline options to /etc/default/grub (like the ones in lines 8-15)
