I just installed Lubuntu 11.10. I spend quite a bit of time in Emacs, and I have a bunch of key bindings that rely on the Super key. However, Lubuntu captures the Super key press and opens the main menu every time. This is quite frustrating.
How I do I unbind this super key behavior? I've tried tweaking lubuntu-rc.xml with no luck.
I seem to have hit upon a solution with a caveat however. Details below.
gconftool-2 to set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu to Super_L (as you have mentioned in your question.sudo aptitude install xvkbdccsm (System -> Preferences -> Compizconfig settings manager) to create a new command bound to Alt+F1. Against Commands -> Commands -> Command 4 enter xvkbd -text "\[Super_L]" and against Commands -> Keybindings -> Run Command 4 select F1 as keybinding.This should work. It is almost completely copied from this ubuntuforums post.
When I tried this in my system, I found 1 very strange issue. The sytem started behaving as if the Alt key was permanently held (e.g., I could just press to switch between windows). I am not sure this is because I had earlier invoked xvkbd to simulate some Alt key presses. If you face this problem, the only option I found to make the system usable again was to follow below steps.
Drop to a terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1
Login with your user name & password
Force logout and restart of X by running below command.
sudo restart gdm
If the problem persists after login also, then you can use the following command to reset the mapping of Super_L to panel_main_menu (back to defauly Alt+F1) gconftool --unset /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu
Unlike Gnome - the keybinding and mouse binding is controlled by a configuration file created when you first login - ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml
Open the file:
leafpad ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml
search for
<context name="Desktop">
Just below this are the statements highlighted:
Replace A-Up with A-S-Up and A-Down with A-S-Down
Alternatively just delete the lines below if you no longer want any ALT key mappings.
<mousebind>....</mousebind>
You should be able to move between desktops with ALT+SHIFT and Clicking.
You will also note if you search for A-Up & A-Down there are various other similar mousebind XML tag situations where Alt and click are used - you could also think about changing these mappings to be consistent.
Save the file, logout and login to test the new key-mappings

Editing .config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml (Lubuntu 12.04) worked here. It's line 177, and the original relevant part looked like this:
<keybind key="Super_L". Changed it to<keybind key="", logged out/in, and the Super key does nothing.
