Per How do I stop the screen from being locked on suspend? I want to be able to sleep and resume without the screen locking.
All the previous answers seem to involve fairly Gnome-specific things that won't apply to me but please correct me if I'm incorrect in that assumption!
What worked for me on Ubuntu 11.10 is to execute the following in a terminal:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen 'true'
You can also install dconf-tools and use dconf-editor to set the same setting manually.
Here are the two common Gnome 3 ways which usually disable suspend; otherwise you can try booting with the acpi=off parameter:
