Ubuntu – How to shut down the computer

I can't find a dialogue anywhere on the desktop (like on Windows Start/shutdown) to shut down Ubuntu. I downloaded and ran the Ubuntu live CD and after I ran it, I couldn't shut it down. I had to hold the on/off key on my computer for 4 seconds to shut down my computer to get back into Windows. If there is a button somewhere, why is it not obvious?

Go to the upper right corner and use the gear menu to select Shut Down.

From the command line try the following command

sudo shutdown -h now

See whether the system shut-down normally. if not take a note of the messages and write them here.

Ubuntu – Cannot shut down on 13.10 and 14.04

The shutdown command does not work if wake on lan is enabled in the bios (see https://communities.intel.com/thread/45667).

If you have to use wake on lan use halt -p instead of shutdown.
