Ubuntu – How to set up two Gnome sessions to start automatically

Is it possible to set up two different Gnome sessions to be started at boot time?

As it is now (and by default in any Ubuntu installation) a gdm login screen is presented after a few minutes of booting. After I log in, it's possible to use the "Switch user" functionality and have a second Gnome session running (for another reason). Then, both sessions are accessible by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F7 and Ctrl + Alt + F8.

Moreover it would be great if both sessions used different settings (different users) for automatic logging in.

I've been researching and the closest I could get to, your answer is to after have one user logged in, log the other user (almost) automatically.

1) Open Gnome Session Properties

gnome-session-properties

2) and add this to a start up

gdmflexiserver

try to press CTRL + ALT + F1 then:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (for Gnome)

sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop (for Unity)

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

if you wish to backup X so not to worry:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

after all of this start X display:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start (for Gnome)

sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm start (for Unity)

The actual used tty consoles have changed around with the introduction of Wayland and 17.10. Now tty1 always contains the login screen, and tty2 contains your actual loaded session.

So use Ctrl+Alt+F3 up to Ctrl+Alt+F7 for getting to an actual unused tty and use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to go back to GUI.
