Ubuntu – How to set up keyboard layout switching and indication in Xubuntu

I use 3 different languages (English, Czech and Russian) every day. I'd prefer to switch (preferably globally, I don't like per-window) between them with Left+Alt+Shift.

I'd also like to see the active language indication.

Unfortunately I couldn't find any obvious way to set this up in XUbuntu 11.10 – there is even no keyboard indicator applet available in the panel configuration. Any recommendations?

There is a keyboard layout plugin for xfce - xfce4-xkb-plugin. Install it, if it's not installed, then add it to the panel. Right click its icon and add the layouts you want.

To configure only keyboard shortcut use:

setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle us,ru

Ubuntu – Pidgin doesn’t show buddy list

Faced the same problem. Completely reinstalling (purge and reinstall) pidgin and it's dependencies solved it for me. Try the following in a terminal.

Purge pidgin and its dependencies:

$ sudo apt-get purge pidgin pidgin-libnotify pidgin-data indicator-status-provider-pidgin

Clear stale archives:

$ sudo apt-get clean

Reboot.

Reinstall pidgin alongwith dependencies:

$ sudo apt-get install pidgin

This solved the issue for me. Pidgin now shows buddy list from indicator menu and when I launch Pidgin manually.

The Xkb directory is located at /usr/share/X11/xkb
Besides, it's not XFCE that uses the directory, it's Xkb, a part of Xorg.
To create a new layout just create a file in symbols/ (eg asdf). After that you can switch to the newly created layout with setxkbmap asdf

Next step would be to register the layout, see the files rules/base.xml and rules/evdev.xml.
After registering you can switch to it other than by calling setxkbmap directly: most desktop environments honor those files and all keyboard layouts you see in keyboard settings are actually from those XML files.
