GRUB Customizer – How to Set Previous Kernel as Default

Can you guys please help me use Grub Customizer to set an older version of the kernel 4.4.0 of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as default when booting? I'm not using a dual boot system, and I have installed 4.4.8 kernel to help me solve the suspend problem, but it's draining my battery.

What do I have to do, I wouldn't want to f*** things up.

Ok .. Decided to give it Grub Customizer a try on a VM box so I didn't screw anything up. I was able to change the default kernel without any issues. Here is how I did it.

In the General settings tab I clicked the pulldown for predefined. It listed all the kernels available. I chose the 3.19.0-58-generic and clicked save ... I rebooted into that kernel. Even though I was worried about it putting the name instead of the numeric value .. it seems to work fine.

So you would have no problems doing the same thing .. just choose the generic one for the kernel you want to use .. not the (upstart) or (recovery mode)

In your case .. the pulldown would probably say either Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-21-generic or Advanced options for Ubuntu>Ubuntu, with Linux 4.4.0-21-generic

According to your menu.lst, Ubuntu 11.04, kernel 2.6.38-11-generic is the first and default option. Normally if you installed originally a release of Ubuntu prior to 9.10, it used grub legacy, and the upgrade process will leave that in place. I also notice that your menu.lst has an option to chain load grub2, so it looks like you somehow got both grub legacy and grub2 installed, which is not allowed. Did you manually install grub-legacy with a livecd?

At this point I would suggest trying to purge all traces of grub legacy and reinstall grub2:

sudo rm -fr /boot/grub
sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub-pc
sudo update-grub

During the reinstall step, you should be presented with a menu with a blue background asking you to check off which drives grub should be installed to. Make sure your boot drive is selected. If you don't get that screen, then you can force it by running sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc.

Restart your computer, when your BIOS is through quickly press shift to open the GRUB menu, you might need a few tries to get the timing right.

There choose Advanced options and select to boot with the older kernel. Then you can safely uninstall everything that belongs to the newer kernel and be done with it:

sudo apt-get remove "linux-headers-4.4.8*"
sudo apt-get remove "linux-image-4.4.8*"
