I can pair my HTC One X with Ubuntu, but I can't send any files to my computer from my phone. Every time I try my phone reports the transfer failed and I never get prompted by the computer to accept the file.

Had the same problem with SGS2, solved by going (on pc) into Bluetooth Preferences -> Receive Files and switching "Receive files into Download folder over bluetooth" back and forth
This might be happening because by default ubuntu doesn't recieve files over bluetooth. One possible solution might be to enable recieving files over bluetooth. Open the personal file sharing preferences window.
Then you'll see this window.
Just check the 'Recieve files in Downloads folder over bluetooth' and you're good to go.
For Ubuntu 18.04 and later:
File sharing can be changed in Settings -> Sharing, which is turned OFF by default.
Also you might need to reconnect after changing this.

Search for "Personal file sharing". Then activate "Receive files over Bluetooth". That is it, worked for me.
