I would like to not show the trash icon at the bottom of the Unity launcher.
Is this possible without having to recompile anything? 😛

From the Gear, choose System Settings
Double click the Appearance icon
Click the behaviour tab and then toggle the autohide option...
You can re-reveal the menu by pushing onto the left-hand side of the window or the top corner depending upon which option is shown as per the picture.
IF you did an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 then do this
gedit ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
In the [Default Applications] section you will find a line that starts with
inode/directory=
Delete the line & save
Again to note: this is only if you did a 11.04 upgrade to 11.10
Edit: This will shortly be addressed by an upgrade to nautilus, the new package is currently in oneiric-proposed & hopefully will be moved to oneiric main repo in near future, my bug on.

In the desktop interface, the Dash icon and the Trash icon use the top and bottom slots of the launcher, always. We have not allowed the removal of the Trash so that we can enable developers to trust that it will always be there, which means "drag to the trash" is always possible.
It might be worth considering relaxing the requirement that the trash always be on the bottom corner, allowing other icons to take that spot. A blueprint to that effect, discussing the consequences and solutions to issues that might arise, would be welcome.
