I'm running a dual monitor setup in Ubuntu 16.04.2.
When I activate unity expo it shows the desktop in all monitors, as illustrated below.
Is it possible to make it show only the desktops on the current monitor (similarly to KDE)?

Lots of people clicking a button doesn't necessarily mean a feature will be implemented :) someone has to find the time to implement the feature.
That being said, I'm going to find a way to combine the two, but we have more important things to focus on right now (stability etc)

Raring has had a number of improvements in this area which should improve the workflow for someone using multiple workspaces.
Lets look at some examples:
In this example you can see that I have Firefox and Terminal open in different workspaces - with firefox open in two instances on separate workspaces:
Look closely at the Launcher:
Firefox is shown with a full pip - thats the arrow shown. It only shows one since this is the only one running in this workspace.
The terminal pip is a narrow version indicating that its running in a different workspace. Thus you get an instant indication of BOTH applications running in the workspace as well as possible other applications running.
If you had two instances of firefox running in the workspace you would have two pips.
To create another instance of Firefox on another workspace, right-click and choose one of the first two options shown:
To flip between different instances, choose from the window title shown in the right-click quicklist.

I've noticed the same issue before, and have spent a long time trying to find a solution.
As I said, I have spent many a long hour studying it, and the only answer I can post, I'm afraid, is no, there is no way to do that with the Expo plugin. It has to be controlled by compiz, and the settings are unfortunately extremely limited. I searched around to see if there would be some way to change configurations, but it looks to me like short of editing the source code and recompiling, it is impossible.
The only workaround I found personally was instead of using the Expo plugin to use the Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube plugins, setting
Multi-Output ModetoMultiple Cubesand unfolding the cube instead of opening the Expo. I don't like it as well, and it just shows a black or transparent spot where the other screen should be, but that's the best I've found.
