Ubuntu – How to make steam see the system as 64 bit system on PlayOnLinux

I don't need a 64 bit version of Steam. I just need Steam to see my system as a 64 bit system inside of PlayOnLinux.

I can only make it see it as a 32 bit version, with which games that require a 64 bit system won't work.

My actual computer is a 64 bit computer but when I install Steam on PlayOnLinux, it recognises it as a 32 system.

When I install other programs they run as a 64 bit system but for some reason I can't get Steam to work in the same way.

I have tried many things. I have Ubuntu 16.10 and wine 1.6.2 and playonlinux 4.2.10.

Anyone knows what I should do?

When I installed it, I used the default Steam on PlayOnLinux, but this sets up a 32bit Wine for it.

Instead, when you use PlayOnLinux's "Install a program" feature, you have to click on the "Install non-listed program" and go through the entire setup.

When it asks you if you want 32 bit or 64 bit, select 64. Then when it asks you for the setup file, select the SteamSetup.exe file from the Steam website (for windows). Install everything and then check in the steam settings if you have a 64 bit windows system.

Things have changed a few times since my original answer. 64bit prefixes versions of Wine are pretty capable these days. I haven't had a pure 32bit version in at least a few years.

Your "Wine prefix" (traditionally at ~/.wine/, but settable via env WINEPREFIX) controls how things will be run for the lifetime of that prefix. If you set up a 32bit prefix, everything will run in 32bit mode in that prefix. Conversely, if you don't do anything and run anything special, you'll create a Wine64 environment.

If you're starting a new prefix (ie on a new install of Ubuntu), you'll need to do a few special things:

# Move the old prefix (if one exists)
# You could rm -rf it if you don't want it.
mv ~/.wine/ ~/oldwine/

# Create prefix with right arch, per
# http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#32_bit_wineprefix
WINEARCH=win32 winecfg

And that's it. Unless you're specifying another prefix that doesn't exist yet, you shouldn't need to set WINEARCH again.

The revision history to this answer holds additional information that I don't think is relevant in 2018. This is mostly point and shoot these days.

Steam is available in the Ubuntu repository distribution. You can install it by running this from a terminal:

$ sudo apt-get install steam

Run Steam from ubuntu's launch button.

You can find Bloons TD Battles in Steam's search menu.
