Ubuntu – How to make file association (not with CLI tool/command)

In Ubuntu 11.04 when I right click on a file in Nautilus and chose "open with" I could select application and tick on check box to make it default application for certain file type

In 11.10 there is no such option, so I'm wondering what's alternative to it now?

Yes, there is. Right click the file and select open with. Or right click and select properties, open with and select the application you want to associate with.

I had the same issue with Nautilus not allowing me to set acroread as the default for pdf files. Perhaps you can use something like I did to fix things up. Like you, mimeopen worked fine.

xdg-mime query default application/pdf # show current association

xdg-mime default /usr/share/applications/acroread.desktop application/pdf

This also made firefox open my pdf links with acroread, which was my real goal, because the default evince "Document Viewer" doesn't open up tab panes and opening up 10+ separate viewers with the Unity desktop is r-e-a-l-l-y painful.

Maybe a similar use of xdg-mime can fix your setup too?

As I found on http://blog.whatgeek.com.pt/?p=319 you can use mimeopen -d /path/to/file to configure a custom application on the cli. It will be used by gnome3 then.

$ mimeopen -d foo.matroska 
Please choose a default application for files of type application/x-matroska

    1) VLC media player  (vlc)
    2) Banshee  (banshee)
    3) Movie Player  (totem)
    4) Other...

use application #4
use command: mplayer
Opening "foo.matroska" with mplayer  (application/x-matroska)
