Ubuntu – How to integrate an application in the sound menu using python

I don't necessarily expect a whole tutorial for creating a sound indicator entry here on askubuntu, but I've searched and searched, and I can't seem to find any documentation on creating a sound indicator. Preferably, I'd like to be able to do this in Python. Can someone point me in the right direction??

Really the way to go overall for user friendly GUI app development is Quickly. It gives you a workflow and several helper scripts to get you up and running fast and easy. It is however very opinionated on the software to use, eg for GUI it uses PyGTK.

My own experience from looking into the Python GUI frameworks is that there is no single best one. Some say wxPython is the way to go, others PyQT. However I believe a lot of the Ubuntu specific software is done using PyGTK.

The add_signal_receiver function can be used without specifying a bus name. This can be useful for capturing signals when the bus name, interface or specific signal name is unknown.

session_bus = dbus.SessionBus()

session_bus.add_signal_receiver(self.do_something,
                                signal_name=None,
                                dbus_interface=None,
                                bus_name=None, 
                                path=None)

The above code calls the do_something method every time a signal is received on the session bus.

In my original question, I stated I wanted to respond to 'AboutToShowGroup'. However, after closer inspection of the 'com.canonical.dbusmenu' interface, I realised it is in fact a method and not a signal. I have since chosen another signal to react to.
