evincepdfpoppler
I am using Ubuntu 16.04 and it does not have the latest version of poppler.
This is blocking me from opening important documents that are password protected. I need the latest version to do my day-to-day stuff. Please explain in easy terms as I'm a Linux newbie.
Can someone either tell me how to upgrade manually or get this included as an update?
I had Evince 3.6.1. The way I upgraded, I just press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When it opens, run the command(s) below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install evince

Keep in mind that the current stable release is 3.6.1.
Or use Synaptic. If not installed, you can install it by, just press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When it opens, run the command(s) below:
sudo apt-get install synaptic

Evince for 12.04 is not available in the repo anymore. its only available for 12.10, and 13.04. To get it for other Ubuntu versions, check here or here.
This is because Ubuntu focuses on stability, not bleeding edge packages, this means that the software in the repositories can be outdated and you must build it from source yourself.
First remove the current installed version
sudo apt-get purge poppler-utils
Install the required build tools
sudo apt-get install build-essential checkinstall
Run these commands to build and install
wget --directory-prefix=~ poppler.freedesktop.org/poppler-0.40.0.tar.xz
tar -xvzf ~/poppler-0.40.0.tar.xz
cd ~/poppler-0.40.0
./configure
make
sudo checkinstall
Now poppler-0.40.0 is installed on your computer.

You've actually fallen in famous X-Y problem loop.
You don't need latest Evince to open password protected pdf. You can just install Foxit reader and make it default PDF viewer. It will gracefully open those pdf.
Download the Foxit reader from here https://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ and install it by double clicking. If that doesn't seem to work, it might be missing executable permission. give it using
