I have just got the printer/scanner. It was automatically detected, but no printer driver was found in the driver database for this particular model. Searching turned up the following .deb – can I trust a driver from this site?

Have the printer connected and on the same Wi-Fi network as the computer.
Go to System Settings, Printers, and add it. It should show up, and walk you through getting drivers and naming it.
In Linux, you rarely need to get software of any kind from Google searches. This is a common mistake of those coming from Windows. Programs come from repositories, and drivers are no different.
The drivers already mentioned in the question are just fine, only they cannot be used with the Simple San or Xsane tools, but they install a tool called ScanGear that can be launched with the command scangearmp.
Outputs: png, pdf, pnm.
To add a .desktop launcher for that:
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/scan.desktop
and paste this:
[Desktop Entry]
Categories=Graphics;Scanning;
Exec=scangearmp
Icon=scanner
Name=Scan
Type=Application
The same can be used within Gimp: File/Create/ScanGear MP, but ScanGear does not need Gimp in order to work.

I recommend to install the original Canon Drivers. I've got a Canon Pixma MP630 and it works without problems.
You should install the scanner and the printer driver. (Scroll down and click the Download button. If the links don't work, go to canon.com and search under Support for your driver.)
For the Canon driver I've had a little bit struggle and had to edit something. I don't know if this is necessary for your driver, too, but maybe this post could help you then.
