Ubuntu – How to get .NET 2.0 SP2 running in wine

I just can't seem to get the .net 2.0 Framework installed using wine / winetricks.

I typed:

winetricks

into the terminal, selected dotnet20sp2, and proceeded to install it.

Unfortunately, I can't get it to work. After accepting the license agreement, it says "Installing" for about 5 seconds, and then reports:

Setup Error

(Yes, that's all it says. Silly Microsoft!)

How should I go about installing it.

This looks quite a bit like the winetricks bug 70. The issue reports the root cause being in a wine bug, but I didn't go in to more detail in my investigations. If this is indeed the case, you might want to add additional information there and follow the bug for new changes in the bug status.

You could also install the windows version of .NET runtime under Wine. This way, Mono is not required, and everything would run under Wine.

This links to .NET framework v4. Maybe this is overkill, and v3 (or even 2) would be enough for Expresso (and most applications)

This is what fixed the blank window and update lags for me when running SketchUp 8 under Wine and Ubuntu 12.04. Start SkethUp like this:

vblank_mode=0 wine /your/path/to/SketchUp.exe

In my case I created a shell script to start SketchUp with this command:

#!/bin/bash
vblank_mode=0 wine $HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Google/Google\ SketchUp\ 8/SketchUp.exe
