Ubuntu – How to fix TPM error 256

This happened when I attempted to upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04.

I receive this error during boot, and my Ubuntu that I've had a few months running without issue twice (not counting during the upgrade) randomly reset to select user and login screen but let me back into my desktop no problem.

During the unpacking part of the update it did this and hung in a select user, type password loop not letting me into the desktop. I turned my computer off twice and on the third try I get a consistent error 256 after selecting Ubuntu from the GRUB menu. My system was at full battery during all these random resets.

How do I fix my system without losing my files? It was only 1/10 or 1/20th unpacked on the update bar. I'm on an Asus with Intel processor/graphics card.

Please go into your BIOS/Setup, find something like Security, then looks for a Chip or TPM item; change the setting to disabled and that should clear the Trusted Platform Module issue.

This sounds similar to an issue I was having, which I answered over in this thread

It seems that the Ubuntu update switched me to a low-latency kernel, which did not automatically update my kernel headers installation like other kernel upgrades have, and the nvidia binary packages require the kernel headers to be present. Try the following:

sudo apt purge 'nvidia-*'
sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo apt install nvidia-384

Note that I did prevent gdm from using Wayland prior to trying anything, and from what I understand Wayland won't currently work with the nvidia binaries, so I'd advise ensuring it's disabled in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf by uncommenting the line #WaylandEnable=false.

You can't run fsck on a mounted file system. So do it this way...

boot to a Ubuntu Live DVD/USB
open a terminal window
type sudo fdisk -l
identify the /dev/XXXX device name for your "Linux Filesystem"
type sudo fsck -f /dev/XXXX # replacing XXXX with the number you found earlier
repeat the fsck command if there were errors
type reboot

You also need to check for a BIOS update.

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version # check current BIOS version

Go to the manufacturer's web site and check for a newer BIOS. If there is one, download it, do backups first, then install the new BIOS.

TPM (Trusted Platform Module) needs to be disabled, configured, or upgraded.
