Ubuntu – How to find the total size of the contents of the Trash folder

Is there any way I can find out exactly how much is in my Trash folder? I can see the size column, but if I have a folder in the trash, it shows the number of items in the folder rather than the total size of the items in the folder.

You can right click on folders in the trash (and those not in the trash) and select Properties to see the total size.

If you want to see the total size of your trash, press Ctrl+a to select everything, and then right click and select Properties.

It is not a permissions problem. This is a known bug which has been reported at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1442649 (it affects more than just Nautilus).

Except for the home filesystem which is a special case (see here for full details), any trashed files are stored in a directory within the root directory of the filesystem they were deleted from, to avoid copying between filesystems.

The Trash folder is a virtual folder that should be a combination of those directories from every filesystem.

A subvolume is a separate filesystem. However, only mount points (e.g. those in /etc/mtab) are actually checked for trash directories. A subvolume which is not mounted separately isn't searched.

As for workarounds, for a given subvolume SUBVOL, trying:

ln -s /mnt/btrfs/.Trash /mnt/btrfs/SUBVOL/.Trash
ln -s /mnt/btrfs/.Trash-1000 /mnt/btrfs/SUBVOL/.Trash-1000

to store the trash on the parent volume does not work.

But the existence of both symlinks (or just empty files of the same name) prevents the creation of the trash directories, so preventing trashing on that subvolume.

WSL provides a Linux-compatible kernel interface developed by Microsoft (containing no Linux kernel code), which can then run a GNU user space on top of it. Such a user space might contain a Bash shell and command language, with native GNU/Linux command-line tools (sed, awk, etc.), programming language interpreters (Ruby, Python, etc.).

Trash is located in ~/.local/share/Trash at least in Ubuntu. ~/.local – or more precisely, ~/.local/share – is where XDG-compliant programs store user data (e.g., fonts, mail messages) according to the XDG Base Directory specification.

Since Ubuntu as a WSL isn't what you expect from Ubuntu OS. WSL only provides you bash(or terminal) and no GUI. So there is no point of having a .local folder.

Also, whenever file is deleted from file manager like Nautilus, Thunar, they are actually moved into ~/.local/share/Trash. Files are usually deleted using rm from Terminal and doesn't moves that to Trash folder.

So there is no trash folder in WSL.
