Ubuntu – How to enable virtualization, Ubuntu 18.04 in VirtualBox on Windows 10

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 in a VirtualBox on a Windows 10 machine.

I'm trying to create and test a Docker swarm by creating a couple virtual machines on my (virtual) Ubuntu OS. (I know, I know. VMs on VMs on VMs. I should just get a Mac). I've downloaded VirtualBox in Ubuntu, and am running the following at command-line:

docker-machine create --driver virtualbox myvm1

Which returns:

Running pre-create checks… Error with pre-create check: "This
computer doesn't have VT-X/AMD-v enabled. Enabling it in the BIOS is
mandatory"

Virtualization is enabled on my Windows 10 machine:

Virtualization also appears enabled for Ubuntu, as viewed through the VirtualBox Settings (running on Windows):

I've tried to enable through the Ubuntu BIOS on startup, but I can't seem to get in there to change anything. If I press F2 or F12 or ESC (or any key for that matter), I can see a list of processes running during startup, but don't have any control, and the OS just boots as normal. Ancillary question, is there a BIOS for Ubuntu running on a VM, or just one for my hardware?

I read that perhaps I should disable Fast Startup on my Windows machine, and have done that, but have seen no difference. And my host machine boots up pretty fast anyway, too.

UPDATE:

If I run in Ubuntu Terminal,

grep --color vmx /proc/cpuinfo

nothing is returned. Same for svm, which would appear to confirm that virtualization is not enabled or possible. The ultimate question is, how do I enable it?

If you want virtualisation INSIDE the guest then you need to enable that in the virtualbox settings.

Possible workaround:

After editing the VM's .vmx file to add

mouse.vusb.enable = "TRUE"
mouse.vusb.useBasicMouse = "FALSE"
usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE"

you'll be able to use your five-button mouse in the VM. To do so, open your VM, then navigate to Virtual Machine > Removable Devices > [Your Mouse] > Connect (Disconnect from Host). You'll get a couple warnings that you won't be able to use your mouse with the host anymore, and just click OK.

Now you can only use your mouse within the VM whether it's full-screen or in windowed mode. Hit Ctrl-G on your keyboard to get rid of the host mouse icon and fully immerse yourself in the VM. Once you need your mouse again outside the VM, hit Ctrl+Alt, then release. Now the focus is back to your host OS. Hold Alt and push V to bring up the Virtual Machine menu, and use your arrow keys to navigate to Virtual Machine > Removable Devices > [Your Mouse] > Disconnect (Connect to Host).

Now everything is back to normal. Hopefully something will change in either Ubuntu or VMWare Player soon to make it easier than this.

Ubuntu – Enable AMD-V (virtualization)

Step 1

Reboot the computer and open the system's BIOS menu. This can usually be done by pressing the delete key, the F1 key or Alt and F4 keys depending on the system.

Select Restore Defaults or Restore Optimized Defaults, and then select Save & Exit.

Power off the machine and disconnect the power supply.

Step 2

Enabling the virtualization extensions in BIOS

Power on the machine and open the BIOS (as per Step 1).

Open the Processor submenu The processor settings menu may be hidden in the Chipset, Advanced CPU Configuration or Northbridge.

Enable Intel Virtualization Technology (also known as Intel VT) or AMD-V depending on the brand of the processor. The virtualization extensions may be labeled Virtualization Extensions, Vanderpool or various other names depending on the OEM and system BIOS.

Enable Intel VTd or AMD IOMMU, if the options are available.

Save & Exit.

Run

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep --color 'vmx\|svm'

If you see vmx or svm in red, the virtualization extensions are now enabled. If there is no output your system may not have the virtualization extensions or the correct BIOS setting enabled.
