Normally when you install Ubuntu in the installer it asks you to install 3rd party stuff which includes this codecs for video/audio.
Click here: ubuntu-restricted-extras
It will ask for some additional dependencies, just say yes. Then click on the apply button. This will install not only the codecs you need but many other things including fonts, flash support and more.
Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and paste the following code :
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Or install using Ubuntu Software center :
It will install proprietary codecs needed for reading audio and video files.
Alternatively you can use VLC Media Player which can play most of the audio/video formats :
sudo apt-get install vlc

Install this package via the command line:
Installing this package will allow you to play MP3 files, and to decode various audio formats such as LAME. It will also allow you to use Microsoft fonts, install the Java Runtime Environment, Adobe Flash, and play DVDs.
