Ubuntu – How to enable Unity again

After installing Ubuntu 14.04, I installed compizconfig-settings-manager. Then I made a mistake and disabled the Unity plugin. After that, Unity (the dash and panel …) are gone.

I can't even run the terminal now.

What should I do? How can I restore or reset it?

Solved!

I had a link to home folder on my desktop. So I opened it and I went to /usr/bin/ from location bar. Then I started gnome-terminal.

In terminal I opened ccsm (compiz config manager) and enabled Unity Plugin again.

And now it works normally!!

What an awful weakness this is for a desktop OS, isn't it?

Shouldn't it have a default thing for these situations to run (automatically)?

Enter the following commands:- Ctrl+Alt+F1 login there with username and password

WARNING! THE FOLLOWING COMMAND WILL TERMINATE YOUR ACTIVE SESSION!

try:

sudo service lightdm restart

If restarting lightdm doesn't fix the problem, install aptitude and then install unity:

sudo apt-get install aptitude
sudo apt-get update && sudo aptitude -f install && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
sudo aptitude install unity

Read the outputs carefully. If you do have broken dependencies, aptitude will give you the "solution" of NOT installing unity. Say no to this solution. Then it will give you another solution which will install broken dependencies. Say yes to this one. Once installation is complete, sudo service lightdm restart again. If you still have some issues, also reinstall ubuntu-desktop:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop

followed by another sudo service lightdm restart.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove unity unity-2d unity-2d-panel unity-2d-spread unity-asset-pool unity-services unity-lens-files unity-lens-music unity-lens-applications gir1.2-unity-5.0 unity-common indicator-sound indicator-power indicator-appmenu libindicator7 indicator-application indicator-datetime indicator-messages libnux-2.0-0 nux-tools libunity-misc4 unity-2d-common

sudo apt-get autoremove

sudo apt-get autoclean

sudo apt-get install unity unity-2d unity-2d-panel unity-2d-spread unity-asset-pool unity-services unity-lens-files unity-lens-music unity-lens-applications gir1.2-unity-5.0 unity-common indicator-sound indicator-power indicator-appmenu libindicator7 indicator-application indicator-datetime indicator-messages libnux-2.0-0 nux-tools libunity-misc4 unity-2d-common

sudo apt-get upgrade

I was able to fix a similar issue in the past like this.
