Ubuntu – How to ENABLE paste in terminal with (middle) mouse button

After an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade my middle mouse button paste stopped working on the Xserver/12.04.2 LTS. It might have been due to a apt-get autoremove as well, which i ran just afterwards, but i don't recall the specific point when it stopped working. Basically copy-paste is gone which i've never seen before on any xserver i've used… quite a handicap.

I've re-installed xsel. If i mark text in xterm and call xsel -p i do see the marked text, so apparently selections are being copied into the primary selection buffer, only the paste key functionaltiy is gone.

Any idea on how to bind any mouse key to paste text from the selection buffer in applications (esp xterm, urxvt) ? (It does not have to be middle mouse button in particular).

enter image description here IMO easiest method is to install gpointing-device-settings

sudo apt-get install gpointing-device-settings

You then 'use wheel emulation'

gpointing-device-settings looks as in image.

try this it may help you out.

Configuration

Following these instructions and this answer and this document:

Do not execute the script shown in the question.
Edit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf.

Append the following lines:

Save and restart X.

Restart X

Enable Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X as follows:

echo setxkbmap -option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp >> ~/.xprofile
chmod +x ~/.xprofile
~/.xprofile

This:

Sets the small left button as the wheel activator (click and hold to scroll).
Sets the small left button as the "back button" (click, no scroll).
Sets the small right button as middle-click to paste.
Enables horizontal and vertical scrolling.
Disables both large buttons as chord-click.

Addendum

After ~~rebooting~~ restarting X, I found the scrolling no longer worked, possibly due to an upgrade. If this happens to you, try:

Remove the following files (I moved mine to ~/.):

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-vmmouse.conf
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-marblemouse.conf
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-evdev-quirks.conf

Remove any additional mouse input device settings from:
```
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
```

Verification

Verify the settings using (where 8 is the device number; yours will likely vary):

xinput get-button-map 8

Ubuntu – Processing clipboard text through a script in between copy and paste

You can use clipnotify to get notified of clipboard changes without polling. From the project page:

while clipnotify; do
    [an event happened, do something with the selection]
done

The tool is only a few lines of C code that uses the XFIXES functionality.
