I want to disable the notification area in gnome-shell because it causes alot of graphical glitches for my computer. I use tint2 for my system tray. Is there a way to do this?

It's an application-specific behavior - you'd need to get the app makers to change it. However, moving it to another desktop will also cause it not to be an eyesore, while alltray as Karni suggested would fill the tray part.
You can get notified via Unity Launcher.
Open your Dash (press Super) and query for Software Sources to open it.
In the Updates tab, modify the settings for
Automatically check for updates:,When there are security updates:andWhen there are other updates:as per your wish.
Now when there would be any updates available, you would be notified via Launcher.

I'm not sure what side effects, if any, this will have, but here's one way to do it:
Find the following line (217 for me):
Comment it out:
Save the file, press Alt-F2 and enter
rto reload GNOME Shell. The tray should now be gone
