How to check if a LaTeX package has been installed in Ubuntu?

When installing, I followed the methods mentioned in math.arizona.edu and n.wikibooks.org.

If you know the name of the .sty or .cls file from the package, you can do

kpsewhich <filename>

and it show you the location of the file where Latex system finds the file. If kpsewhich doesn't find it, you probably didn't install the files correctly or didn't run mktexlsr or texhash.

Also, please show us the output of

echo $TEXINPUTS

from the commandline.

Many other dependencies also got in when you ran sudo apt-get install texlive. When you ran the apt-get remove command, then only the texlive package was uninstalled, not its dependencies.

You can easily remove these extra unneeded dependencies by running:

sudo apt-get autoremove

I advise to recur to an installation by hand of a tex package only when such tex package is not available in an ubuntu package.

Searching for it with

apt-file -x search '/textcomp.sty$'

I obtain the following results:

texlive-latex-base: /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/base/textcomp.sty

and it say the tex package you look for is contained in the ubuntu package whose name is texlive-latex-base, so install it, if not already installed.

sudo apt-get install texlive-latex-base

By the way, apt-file is a command to install separately contained in the apt-file package, and only a convenient and alternative way to search into the repositories the same way as http://packages.ubuntu.com/.
