I have moved my VirtualBox VM's files to some external disk (I have many VMs and I don't have to much space on my laptop). Now when I start my VirtualBox application. I am having this error message:

Runtime error opening '/home/user/VirtualBox VMs/vm1/vm1.vbox' for reading: -102(File not found.).

I was wondering if it is possible to set a new path to my external disk so that VirtualBox could see my VM and start it without error. If this don't work, I will have to find how to Launch the virtual machine in a different way.

Easy!

To fix:

Open the regular virtual box gui. In the main window, right click on the machine that has been moved. It should have the word "Inacessible" (damn arrogant spell checkers, anyway) by it. Then click "remove" in the menu. Then left click the "remove" button in the pop up window to confirm it.

Now, using a graphical file browser, navigate to the new location of the machine. Right click on the something.vbox file and, in the context menu, click on "Open with virtualbox" or something like that. The exact entry wording may vary a bit depending on the exact version you have.

That's it. You're done.

To change the default path for VMs, also easy:

In the VB gui you can also change the default path for new machines if you want to. In the upper left, click "File" to get a menu. Click "preferences" in the menu. You'll get a pop up box where you can set whatever default path you want.

You're going about this the wrong way, you are trying to add an ISO image as a CD/DVD drive. Instead, first, create the new VM, using Debian 32bit as the OS type. Then, once this has been created, go into the VM's Settings and choose the "Storage" tab. Once there, select the "Empty" item under the IDE controller:

Then, click on the CD icon on the top right, and select the 1st choice,

In the dialog that will appear, select the Kali .iso, save the settings and then boot the machine. It will boot from the .iso you just selected and you should be able to istall with no problems.

I had this permissions issue when running VM's from a thumb drive.

The problem I was having was that my system (Fedora 27) automatically mounts new drives (external HDDs, USB, SD) to

/run/media/(username)/(device name) (on your system it's /media/username/....)

For whatever reason this causes the permissions issue. By default it was mounted with fmask=0022 and dmask=0022 (use man mount for details). To fix the issue we need to unmount the drive from that location as root, and then mount it to /mnt. In the example below the thumb drive is /dev/sdc1. We need to remount it with fmask=0011 to allow write access for all users and groups.

# su  -     (then enter root password)
# umount  /run/media/yourusername/devicename
# mount  /dev/sdc1 /mnt -o fmask=0011        (mount usb to /mnt)

After that I just made sure to have symbolic links from the original location of the qcow2 drives to the new location (still as root)

# cd  /var/lib/libvirt/images
# ln  -s  (new target)  (link name)

so if your VM is named MyVM

# ln  -s  /mnt/Myvm.qcow2  MyVm.qcow2

Once I saw that my VMs were now working, I edited /etc/fstab to automatically mount the drive at /mnt. The folders and qcow2 drives were owned by my standard user account and group. I am sure there are better ways to do it, but this is what worked for me.
