Ubuntu – How to change the nvidia GPU fan speed

So im trying ubuntu again after being off it for awhile in win7 i can set gpu fan to 10-30% and its barly reaching 52c , however with ubuntu nvidia set it to 55% wich is really loud on my msi 460gtx.

This is the only thing that keeps me from using ubuntu is there really no program or way to set manually like msi afterburner / evga precision , temperature curve & fan speed?.

Default fan is way to loud and its barly 3 c diffrence from 25% gpu fan speed to 55% but the noise is alot more.

In the terminal run:

sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig --cool-bits=4

restart your computer and search for NVIDIA X Server Settings in the Dash. There should be an option to change fan speed under Thermal Settings.

You can do this with the tool

pwmconfig

This tool is normally used to save a configuration file for fancontrol. But you don't have to do so. You can just start the tool, than it will put all fans on full speed, sowing there current speed like this:

Giving the fans some time to reach full speed...
Found the following fan sensors:
  hwmon0/device/fan1_input     current speed: 2129 RPM
  hwmon0/device/fan2_input     current speed: 1679 RPM
  hwmon0/device/fan3_input     current speed: 0 ... skipping!
  hwmon0/device/fan4_input     current speed: 0 ... skipping!

After that you just skip (Ctr+C) the tool without saving anything.

To install the tool, you can use the following command:

sudo apt-get install fancontrol

Sounds like you have the opposite issue with fan speed to what I had. My fans used to run high, constantly. Here is my solution for getting my fan speeds back to normal, from another thread:

Fan speed is normalized by editing the line

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

in the grub configuration file found at /etc/default/grub so that it reads

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=!Windows 2012".

Follow these steps to try this solution:

Open a terminal, type

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub,

and press ENTER

Enter your login password and press ENTER (the password will not be displayed as you type it)

Edit the line,

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

such that it reads,

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=!Windows 2012".

Click "Save", wait a few moments for the file to save, then close the text editor.

In the terminal, type

sudo update-grub

and hit ENTER

Finally, shut down your computer. Shut it down completely, so don't "restart" it.

Once you turn your computer back on and select the linux operating system whose grub file you edited earlier, your fans should be working normally. This solution has worked for me on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, and LXLE on a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 laptop.
