Ubuntu – How to bring up last terminal window with a shortcut key

I use terminal so often for making quick commands and then I leave it in the background so that I end up getting 20+ terminal sessions open while I'm working. This is because it's very quick to simply use the shortcut key and type a command.

Is there a way to set up the shortcut key so I bring my up last terminal window instead of creating a new one?

I have a terminal pinned to my Unity launcher sidebar on position 10. This way I can press Super+0 to "click" the launcher icon which brings the latest terminal window to the top.

If having it in the launcher is ok for you (one of the first 10 positions, otherwise it won't get a shortcut!), this will work.

The Keybinder library does exactly this. If you check pull requests there are requests in for examples using pygi, one of which is me for py3k.

You can bind ESC to the Readline function unix-line-discard:

bind '"\e": unix-line-discard'

To make the change permanent, add the command to ~/.xinputrc:

printf "bind '\"\\\e\": unix-line-discard'\n" >>~/.xinputrc

And source ~/.xinputrc in ~/.bashrc:

printf 'source ~/.xinputrc\n' >>~/.bashrc

To load the change also in the current shell, source ~/.xinputrc:

source ~/.xinputrc

This is a Bash feature, so it will work across any terminal, unless the terminal is hijacking the ESC key itself, for example if ESC is part of a terminal-specific keystroke, in which case you'll have to disable the offending keystroke in the terminal.
