Ubuntu – How to access the internet from a virtual machine in Gnome Boxes

I installed Gnome Boxes, created a new virtual machine and booted an ISO. The ISO boots up fine and the network inside the virtual machine got automatically configured by the distro (with dhcpd):

IP enp0s3 got the IP 10.0.2.15
DNS nameserver: 10.0.2.3
Gateway default: 10.0.2.2

Both other hosts are up and I can ping all IPs. DNS works too. But I can't ping anything not on the local net.

Thanks to a user in the german Arch-Linux board I got an answer: Boxes uses NAT for the host, and some protocols (like ICMP) aren't working. So I couldn't use ping, tracepath and the like, but the network and an installation works nevertheless.

Gnome-boxes cannot be installed on 12.04.

GNOME boxes has not been packaged due to dependency problems. If you want to try out the boxes, try compiling from the source.

For 12.10 and newer it can be installed by simply typing:

sudo apt-get install gnome-boxes

If you are looking to use a newer version, you can consider installing it from the source tarballs.

Do take note that GNOME boxes is still very much in development.

Ubuntu – Ubuntu 18.04 VirtualBox Guest – No Internet Access

/etc/network/interfaces has been replaced by netplan on Ubuntu 18.04 (Why did Ubuntu change the network configuration)

The following works for me:

sudo vim /etc/netplan/60-mynetwork.yaml

network:
    ethernets:
        enp0s8:
            dhcp4: true
    version: 2

sudo netplan apply
