Ubuntu – How do i build from git repository with submodules on Launchpad

I'm currently trying to revive our project PPA since we started using Git submodules two months ago and import to Bazaar stopped working since it's doesn't support submodules. So I removed bzr and successfully imported our repository to Launchpad as Git.

Sadly after I attempted to build it with newly created recipe build is failing since repository isn't cloned recursively and submodules still not present. I can't find any help in Launchpad own documentation and while it's support feature called "nesting" it's doesn't seems to be good choice to workaround recursive clone.

How can I make Launchpad clone repository recursively before the build?

There's no way to do it at the moment, but this is a known bug and should be fixable. (Feel free to dig into the git-build-recipe source and propose a fix if you're in a rush.)

The You have not informed bzr... message is just noise (it's occurring because the buildds connect over http), and is irrelevant. Your actual problem is this:

bzr: ERROR: No previous changelog to take the package name from, and --package not specified: debian/changelog was not present.
RUN: /usr/share/launchpad-buildd/slavebin/scan-for-processes ['/usr/share/launchpad-buildd/slavebin/scan-for-processes', 'd32285173fe3adb998c9dc6e2664f76ffd961367']

You need to merge in a packaging branch that contains an appropriate debian directory including a debian/changelog. If the thing you're packaging is already in Ubuntu you can often just merge from that, but as bugzilla4 does not seem to be in Ubuntu yet, you will probably need to create a new packaging branch. It will probably be easier if you do that in Launchpad in Bazaar so that it can eventually become the main packaging branch, and you might be able to start from the lp:ubuntu/bugzilla branch, depending how much they've changed from 3 to 4.

Dobey's answer, it is more easy/quick to track dependencies using pbuild or sbuild. Check SimpleBuild.

However if you have small tool to package with low bandwidth connect, myself prefer building on launchpad directly as I don't have a ready setup of chroot environment, sometimes working on low resource machine.

From the buildlog:

   dh_auto_test -a

It clear that you need the qmltestrunner tool for build, check it's package:

$ dpkg -S qmltestrunner
qtdeclarative5-dev-tools: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qmltestrunner
qtchooser: /usr/bin/qmltestrunner

So add them to build dependencies.

 Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 9), qtdeclarative5-dev-tools, qtchooser

Then upload it again.

Update:

I have used pbuild long time ago and I looked again for new things. I think cowbuilder ^① is the simplest available tool.

Install it.
```
 sudo apt-get install cowbuilder
```

Edit the pbuildrc config

 # this is your configuration file for pbuilder.
 # the file in /usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc is the default template.
 # /etc/pbuilderrc is the one meant for overwriting defaults in
 # the default template
 #
 # read pbuilderrc.5 document for notes on specific options.
 MIRRORSITE=archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

 COMPONENTS="main universe"

Two known problems:

The MIRRORSITE=archive.canonical.com/ubuntu will not work. (seen in trusty, no such problem in wily)
COMPONENTS="main universe", default is main only, universe is needed for cowdancer^②.

Create the cow image
```
 sudo cowbuilder --create
```

Build your debian source pacakge

 sudo cowbuilder --build yourpackage.dsc

Find the built packages in:
```
 /var/cache/pbuilder/result/
```
