I receive this error:

According to your issue you had to disable unstable ppa/repos as instructed here
Then open a terminal and run:
If you want to use more fresh version of VLC media player rather than in official Ubuntu repos, you can use Videolan official stable-daily PPA:

Just for the others who face an issue upgrading vlc to 2.2.0 on 14.04LTS even occured to me with
ppa:videolan/stable-daily
it still had 2.1.6 version installed. To upgrade it to 2.2.0 version add thistrusty-media
