Gnome-screenshot 3.1.2 uses filenames like this one

making it rather easy to see when it was taken.
The problem is that it uses the colon ( : ) character – making it impossible to access such an image from Windows.
Considering I take most of my screenshots so I can send them to Windows users this has caused some problems.
Is there any way to change the default name that is used by the screenshot tool to replace the ":" with "." or "," ?
This bug has been reported in the GNOME Bugzilla bug tracking system.
D-Bus allows programs to register with it in order to offer services. It also allows client programs to check for the availability of services.
The service is either not known for the DBus backend or it cannot be run for security reasons.
You can try to run the tool as root and see if it works.

From the command line, run the command sudo apt-get install dconf-editor
Or click here to install from the Ubuntu Software Center:
Press Alt + F2 and type dconf-editor
Go to org -> gnome -> gnome-screenshot
At "auto-save-directory" type the desired directory in the following format: file:///home/user/Desktop/
A tip for anyone who is using the configuration editor in unity: click on the arrow to the left the org text to expand it.
Simply run this command, replacing the path with your preferred directory.
gsettings set org.gnome.gnome-screenshot auto-save-directory "file:///home/$USER/Downloads/"

It is not actually possible change it easily, maybe you can help with this bug report.
(for the curious, check the source code. Currently, relevant line is 134)
Update: The bug was fixed upstream on 2015-01-28, replacing colons with dashes, which helps. But they didn't take the space out unfortunately.
