Ubuntu – Has anyone managed to configure Nautilus to show EXIF data

I followed instructions on the Ubuntu Forums to configure Nautilus to display additional information about image files – specifically, the EXIF data:

My machine is running Ubuntu 11.04. Having followed the procedure outlined in the above thread, I killed all instances of Nautilus, restarted Nautilus and selected the required columns in the view preferences.

Unfortunately, the Date EXIF Dateshot EXIF Image Size EXIF Software EXIF Flash columns are blank. The only column that displays info is Image Size.

I followed the same procedure on my Ubuntu 10.10 machine at work, and the EXIF data is displayed.

I expected this method to work on 11.04, as none of the steps appear to be 10.xx specific.

Any ideas?

Nautilus Properties – Show Size in Bytes for Multiple Selects and Directories

The value displayed is called by the function g_format_size_for_display of GLib. You have to edit the source code of nautilus to change this behaviour by just adding an %i to the output:

Step 1: Download source, install dependencies and open the file to edit

mkdir -p .p/nautilus && cd .p/nautilus
sudo apt-get build-dep nautilus
apt-get source nautilus && cd nautilus*
gedit src/file-manager/fm-properties-window.c

Step 2: Change the code

Now go to line 2338 (in Nautilus 2.30) and change with size %s to with size %s (%i Bytes). Do the same for totalling %s. Change it to totalling %s (%i Bytes) It should now look like this:

    text = g_strdup_printf (ngettext("%'d item, with size %s (%i Bytes)",
                     "%'d items, totalling %s (%i Bytes)",

Step 3: Compile

Now you can simply compile Nautilus like every other application

./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo make install
nautilus -q

Note that Nautilus will be overwritten whenever there will be an update to it through package management. This means you have to build and install it again manually.

There is also an alternative way by using an Nautilus script, but this would add another entry in the right click meny instead of having the value in the properties window.

Ubuntu – Devices list aren’t show on Nautilus

You can mount your partitions automatically on startup.

A very good tutorial on Ubuntu wiki on how to achieve it is given here.

You can also edit your /etc/fstab file, however it is more complex and generally not recommended if you've less experience.

/etc/fstab contains information of where your partitions and storage devices should be mounted and how.

The program that causes the nautilus to show the devices is gvfs-gdu-volume.

Check if it's running:

sudo ps -e | grep gvfs-gdu-volume

I got the following output:

1983 ?        00:00:00 gvfs-gdu-volume

If not, reinstall the package gvfs:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall gvfs
