Ubuntu – Gui shutdown on acer aspire v5-573G not working

When I press the gui shutdown button, the system is not powering off, but rather just remains at splash screen. Hence, I always have to power off the machine manually holding the power button. Issuing shutdown -h or shutdown -P from command line works fine while shutdown -H causes the same problem as the gui shutdown.

I use ubuntu 13.10 (uefi version) on an Acer Aspire V5-573G.
Adding the line "INIT_HALT = POWEROFF" to /etc/default/halt as suggested here does not help.

Any suggestions are very welcome!

It is a bug. Fixed in latest kernel 3.13-rc5.

The shutdown command does not work if wake on lan is enabled in the bios (see https://communities.intel.com/thread/45667).

If you have to use wake on lan use halt -p instead of shutdown.

I was having the same issue of hangout on startup/shutdown with Ubuntu 14.04 on an Acer E3-111-C9NY, found a solution for it on:

Basically, you have to blacklist the modules dw_dmac and dw_dmac_core, you do that by adding to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf the following lines:

blacklist dw_dmac
blacklist dw_dmac_core

After that, the laptop start/shutdown/suspend works fine.
