Ubuntu – Gmail login failure on Thunderbird

I am attempting to login to a gmail account on Thunderbird but I keep getting the following message:

Authentication Failure while connection to server imap.gmail.com

I have changed the related application password 5 times with no change in behavior. But if I use the web gmail the password changed and I can read my email. At present I can not read, download, or save my email with Thunderbird.
I have two other email accounts but they are not affected.
Any idea what is going on here?

I was able to solve this issue by changing the following setting general.useragent.compatMode.firefox to true (found in Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General/Config Editor).

Folderpane Tools add-on should allow you to override startup folder.

You can get Popper work again on Ubuntu 14.04 with the following actions (see bug 1683516 ):

Then for MATE - mate-tweak -> Panel (Interface) -> Enable indicators.

Then Applications -> Internet -> Popper - set account settings.
