Ubuntu – Editing sources.list

I have edited the sources.list file in order to install a distribution of ns2. However when I run sudo apt-get update command it gives a 404 error that the package could not be located.

looking at the link, it directs to 'binary-i386', however inspecting the link I need it to direct to 'binary-amd64'. How could I change this?

The link in sources.list only contains /precise contrib at the end, the binary-i386 is inputted automatically by Ubuntu.

Don't use apt-get for installing ns2. The best way is installing it manually, because you can install the most updated version of it. Some months ago I installed ns2.30 on Ubuntu 12.10. You can find my experience in my blog.

The format for a sources.list entry using the deb and deb-src types is:

   deb [ options ] uri suite [component1] [component2] [...]
... 
options is always optional and needs to be surrounded by square
brackets. It can consist of multiple settings in the form
setting=value. Multiple settings are separated by spaces. The following
settings are supported by APT (note however that unsupported settings
will be ignored silently):

·   arch=arch1,arch2,...  can be used to specify for which
    architectures information should be downloaded. If this option is
    not set all architectures defined by the APT::Architectures option
    will be downloaded. 

·   arch+=arch1,arch2,...  and arch-=arch1,arch2,...  which can be used
    to add/remove architectures from the set which will be downloaded.

The first line gets package information for the architectures in
APT::Architectures while the second always retrieves amd64 and armel.

       deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian wheezy main
       deb [ arch=amd64,armel ] http://ftp.debian.org/debian wheezy main

So try something like:

deb [ arch=armhf ] http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ wheezy main contrib non-free rpi armhf

Editing /etc/sources.list is one step to migrate to a subsequent release in Debian...but not in Ubuntu. You can still use it, but it's not recommended because most users shouldn't need to deal with precisely the problems you encountered.

Instead, Ubuntu provides a tool (the do-release-upgrade command) that will properly change the sources, download and install the upgrade, and remove orphans, all in a predictable and reproducible way to prevent corner-case problems. This tool is the recommended way to upgrade to a newer release of Ubuntu.
