Just installed Ubuntu on Fujitsu Laptop. Mucic CD plays ok but not DVD. Installed Ubuntu restricted extras and
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
apt-get install regionset
But still not able to play just normal bought DVD movie.
VLC does not recognise output/input
Any suggestions please.
Open terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and run following command to install require dependencies :
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg libxine1-ffmpeg gxine mencoder libdvdread4 totem-mozilla icedax tagtool easytag id3tool lame nautilus-script-audio-convert libmad0 mpg321 && sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
Restart may necessary.
WARNING: Run encrypted video on Linux is illegal, so make sure its legal on your area.

Since medibuntu is no longer available, you have to install libdvdcss2 manually :
wget http://download.videolan.org/pub/debian/stable/libdvdcss2_1.2.13-0_i386.deb
sudo apt-get update
sudo dpkg -i libdvdcss2_1.2.13-0_i386.deb
Now encrypted dvd should run perfectly fine
Install ubuntu-restricted-extras and libdvdread4
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
then run this command.
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
now open up VLC
Click on Media --> Open Disc untick No disc menus then click play.

It sounds like libdvdcss2 is missing, libdvd4 also relies on libdvdcss2.
medibuntu used to provide libdvdcss2 but ubuntu restricted extras does not
medibuntu is no more and VLC now packages libdvdcss2
Check your countries laws some do not allow you to install libdvdcss
Since vlc is installed try
sudo apt get install libdvdcss2If that fails
Option 2 install the latest libdvdcss2 via a .deb
