Ubuntu – Dropbox problem in Indicator applet in Gnome classic

I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 and as I am more comfortable with Gnome classic, I have installed gnome-session-flashback and happily using that. It has some issues that can be tolerated. However, one thing that's really bothering me is that when I click at Dropbox icon in indicator applet I get a black dropdown that shows nothing. (Please see figure below.) Any suggestion how to solve this issue?

I had the same problem and this solved the issue for me :

dropbox stop && DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS="" dropbox start

Going by the info found in this dropbox update and the subsequent OMG! Ubuntu! article regarding that update, it would seem the files you need are (should be) in

/usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22/status/

Also be sure that your per-user setting doesn't ruin things. Check (I think it should be that one anyway) :

~/.icons/hicolor/22x22/status/

Note:

I don't have dropbox installed or anything, so this is mostly assumptions combined.
Depending on your theme, I guess it is possible that the values from hicolor get overwritten.
That update link at the beginning also contains a tar that holds the icons incase you need them.

Ubuntu – Filter messages to “notification area” applet

A crude generic solution:

How to disable notification from network-manager.

dbus-monitor "interface='org.freedesktop.Notifications'"                \
| grep --line-buffered  'string "NetworkManager"'                       \
| sed -u -e  's/.*/killall notify-osd/g'                                \
| bash

Replace string "NetworkManager" with the desired RE to filter out messages.

To get an idea of what RE pattern match to look for run:
dbus-monitor "interface='org.freedesktop.Notifications'"
and look at the output while the notifications are popping-up.

Caveat:
killall notify-osd is non-discriminating and completely wipes the notification stack of any pending messages irregardless of whether NM is the notifying agent.
