Why Compiz Uses 25% CPU While Idle

After clean boot with only Chrome running idle, Compiz is taking 25% all the time. It keeps my fan running non stop. Is this a regression or something?

To be able to run Unity in Ubuntu 12.10 we need to enable 3D acceleration in Virtual Box. This is done by both, providing 3D acceleration in the VM settings, and by installing the virtual graphics driver provided with the Guest Additions.

The normal procedure to install the guest additions will not work as we won't have a graphical desktop. We therefore will have to boot Ubuntu into a terminal shell.

Ubuntu – Compiz high CPU

To get latest drivers for the graphic card go to software center, edit(in the menu bar), software sources, additional drivers. You should find proprietary drivers for your GPU here.

Compiz usually doesn't use much cpu even if it's running on CPU. This may be caused by many programs opening at once, or there is some conflict between plugins. Restoring compiz to default setting should solve that. See here how to restore Compiz to default look here
