Ubuntu – Dell Alps Touchpad not working

I have a Dell 17R SE with Ubuntu 13.04. The touchpad is recognized as PS/2 mouse out of the box, giving just normal touchpad behaviour, but no tap to click, no scrolling, etc.

Most answers related to that issue suggest trying an ALPS driver from dahetral.com: http://www.dahetral.com/public-download

Now my xinput looks like this:

My touchpad isn't working at all now, just the two hardware buttons for left and right mouse buttons work.

Interestingly also the tap to click functions works, but only in the address bar of nautilus, nowhere (!) else.

What can I do?
I would even switch back to initial state, where at least the basic touchpad functionality worked, i I knew, how to get there.

Try sudo modprobe psmouse i was able to get my touchpad working following this guide.

It look a lot like the one you followed except for that last command. My touchpad also stopped working before i issued that last command.

First of all, to identify which touchpad you have, run

xinput list

If it shows something like

↳ AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint                  id=14   [slave  pointer  (2)]
...

then you most probably do not have multitouch support. The Alps touchpads tend not to have multitouch, while they use the same driver as the Synaptic touchpads.

You can use synclient -l to obtain information on your touchpad.

Still, the definitive way to see how many fingers are supported on your touchpad, is to

Enable SHMConfig in your xorg.conf file
Run synclient -m 100, which will show in real time the status of your touchpad. The fifth column labeled f is for fingers, therefore you can see up to how many fingers you can tap at the same time.

To enable SHMConfig in xorg.conf, see http://mjg59.livejournal.com/118588.html and then add

Section "InputClass"
   Identifier "enable synaptics SHMConfig"
   MatchIsTouchpad "on"
   MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
   Option "SHMConfig" "on"
EndSection

to your xorg.conf. You can remove the above snippet once you performed your testing.

You can change the setting of the synclient by adding to the startup application a new application with the following command:

xterm -e synclient "EmulateTwoFingerMinZ=10"

This would change the setting of EmulateTwoFingerMinZ to the value of 10
