Ubuntu – Crackling and delayed sound after upgrading to 18.04

I just upgraded to 18.04, and I noticed that the sound from my headphones, whether plugged into front or back port, was very crackling and slow/delayed. This issue didn't exist on 17.04/10. It also doesn't affect audio coming from HDMI via Radeon 560 GPU, just the headphone/onboard audio. The relevant device is:

00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H HD Audio (rev 31)

I tried a bunch of fixes for pulseaudio I found googling, including this one and this one. Neither of which helped.

I have found something that at least makes it listenable – changing "default-fragment-size-msec" from 25 to 5 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf. It makes it much much better, but still a little crackly from time to time.

I've googled for 30 min or more now, and not finding anything else that seems recent and relevant, so wondering if I should maybe open a bug, or if there's something I'm overlooking here.

I had the same issue and killing pulseaudio fixed it for me. I'm not sure why it would get into a bad state, but restarting pulseaudio might be something to try.

killall pulseaudio

Ubuntu – 5.1 Surround System Subwoofer not working

Okay guys I finally found out the solution on myself!

Realtek did destroy alsa indeed, but because ubuntu 11.10's alsa version was too new for Realtek 's driver! So now I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx (which GUI I like much more than 11.10's Unity...). I installed the driver after these instructions:

1) get this package

sudo apt-get install build-essential

2）Unpacking

tar xfvj LinuxPkg_5.16rc25.tar.bz2
cd realtek-linux-audiopack-5.16
tar xfvj alsa-driver-1.0.24-5.16rc25.tar.bz2

3）Compiling and installing

cd alsa-driver-1.0.24
sudo ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
sudo make
sudo make install

4）Reboot

sudo reboot

After that I had to change the Hardware Profile to 5.1 Analog Output + Analog Stereo Input and then my Subwoofer finally worked!!!!!!

But then I created a playlist in VLC and after every track my Subwoofer didn't work again!!! Mysterious... But I fixed that too ;) I had to set in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf the line :

enable-lfe-remixing = no

enable-lfe-remixing = yes

Besides that I found out there seems to be a mistake in this file!!!! one line says:

; default-sample-channels

you got to remove the semicolon ( ; ) and enter your number of channels so that it looks like this (for my case a 5.1 system):

default-sample-channels=6

After all that trouble I can finally enjoy my 5.1 Sound system on Ubuntu (unfortunately not on the latest version but what should I do ;) )

I hope I can help someone with the same problem because it was hard work for me to find all that stuff out!

Just wanted to add to this, I followed similar instructions to have sound work briefly after a reboot with a dell XPS 13 running Ubuntu cosmic (18.10). Switching between 'auto' and 'generic' didn't change much

sudo alsa force-reload

worked for me.
