How to update ClamAV

whenever i try to update clamAV i get the following report

"WARNING: Can't query current.cvd.clamav.net

WARNING: Invalid DNS reply. Falling back to HTTP mode.
Reading CVD header (main.cvd):

WARNING: can't read main.cvd header from db.local.clamnet.net"

i used freshclam once before and it worked fine but after a month when i tried i am getting this warning

Try reconfiguring freshclam for updating from a different mirror.

At a terminal window type in:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure clamav-freshclam

Select OK

Select if you want Freshclam to run as a Daemon:

Select a mirror closest to you: (I'm in the US but there are mirrors all over the world)

HTTP Proxy can normally be left blank:

Type in how many times a day you want Freshclam to update: (24 means once per hour)

Select if you want clamd to be notified after update: (clamd is the scanner running all the time if you have it set up)

Select private mirror. Should be blank.

There are two clamav packages in Ubuntu:

clamav (The virus scanner itself, with only a CLI interface)
clamtk (A community build front-end for clamav)

The install clamav with GUI, you will need both. for the CLI only,just install clamav:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install clamav
sudo apt-get install clamtk

When the installation is finished, enter the following to update your virus DB:

sudo clamav clamav-freshclam

Optionality you can also install the clamav daemon with:

sudo apt-get install clamav-daemon

And to also be able to scan zip files, you will need to do:

sudo apt-get install libclamunrar6

vim /etc/clamd.conf

ScanArchive=yes

Ubuntu – CLAMAV not working

Steps 1-3 below include commands run in a terminal. Please read carefully so that you understand what you are doing.

Remove potentially bad AV installations:

sudo apt-get remove clamav 
sudo apt-get remove clamtk 
sudo apt-get remove freshclam
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

Reinstall AV:

sudo apt-get install clamav        #Terminal Version
sudo apt-get install clamtk         #GUI version

Update AV Database:

sudo freshclam               #takes ~30 minutes to download definitions

Configure AV & Scan:
This example uses clamtk only

clamtk                      #Opens GUI

toggle all options under Settings tab:

Network
- toggle proxy and type http://127.0.0.1
- toggle / reselect **No Proxy **(to gray out what you entered above)
Update Assistant
- toggle manual update option and click apply and back
- toggle automatic update option and click apply and back
You should now see updated definition count

Scan a Directory
- select directory you want scanned. For system scan I toggled the entire system (not just /root or /usr)
- Click scan and a progress box will appear.

Final Note: typing the phrase --help (without quotations) following command gives some hints. With APT commands you can pass the option -y to say yes to installing all dependencies for the requested package.

This is what I had to do to get clam working, perhaps a glitch for both clamtk and clamav (problem with both). Hope this helps someone else!!!
